DEFENSE UNDER THE DEFICIT GUILLOTINE

$400 BILLION is a huge number, $800 BILLION is impossible without totally reforming America’s idea of what a standing military looks like. At the $400 billion level there may be some positive and much-needed rationalization of procurement programs and wasteful spending practices, at $800 billion cuts will alter our strategic position in the world. Further, over the past decade so much of America’s defense spending has come under “wartime supplementals” that even $400 BILLION will actually be more as the this includes winding down both wars and their supplementals packed with extra gear and development dollars. Things are scary right now in Washington, I just hope that the “cut at all costs” mentality doesnt impede America’s future strategic superiority around the globe to an extent that we simple no longer have the capabilities that are necessary to maintain security of our interests.
