Cool video about how the master test pilots up at Boeing Commercial Aircraft do their thing. The T-33 chase planes are a common and enjoyable site up at Boeing Field. As an aviation photographer, or as just a casual onlooker, it is really cool to see them execute a “midfield pickup.” This is where the T-33 launches first, and re-enters the landing pattern to come around and “pickup” the heavy jet that begins rolling as the T-33 turns on final. The idea is to have the T-33 and heavy Boeing jet in locked formation as the big Boeing starts it’s transition to flight. I have never seen them overshoot or undershoot this amazing feat, they nail the timing every single time, which considering the differences in aircraft is just amazing. You can tell that there are some experienced hands working the T-33′s throttle throughout the operation.
