If I remember correctly, the Phantom was the first aircraft that could accelerate while climbing straight up. While in the Navy, I spent some time at NAS Key West, where the East Coast F-4 rag outfit (training squadron) was based. I quickly learned to hate hearing them hit the after-burner for their 3 a.m. take-offs. In case you’ve forgotten, it was a single-stage A/B and made a heck of a bang when it was turned on, and immediately followed by a heck of a roar. Listen to them land in the wee hours wasn’t pleasant either. The engine intake flaps made a heck of a squeal when they were moved.

The F-111′s fire trail was a neat trick: dump fuel and ignite it. The only thing you had to do was make sure your were going fast enough that the flames didn’t catch up with the A/C. Of course, that’s true with all fuel dumps: make sure you’re going fast enough!
