JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH: THE LEGENDARY F-111 “AARDVARK”

Imagine what type of speed, range, and combat capability this machine could pack today if the airframe was rebuilt with modern avionics, including a huge AESA radar array, side-by-side glass cockpit, modern lightweight construction techniques, and a pair of the Raptor’s F-119 turbofans?

The F-111 airframes were out of hours they couldn’t be rebuilt and had been extended many times. The sole remaining operator was raiding the bone yard to keep its fleet vaguely viable it just got way to hard and expensive to keep operational.

The concept of a medium bomber which lets face it was the F-111’s role is probably not a bad one but you really need to start from the ground up, re-engineering existing airframes is only ever a stop gap measure.
